How to provide your own in-app install experience
Many browsers make it possible for you to enable and promote the installationof your Progressive Web App (PWA) directly within the user interface of yourPWA. You’ll be prompted to install the app on your system. Click “Install.” You’ll get an application with its own window, taskbar icon, and Start menu entry. In addition to the browser provided install experience,it's possible to provide your own custom install flow, directly within your app.
When considering whether to promote install, it's best to think about howusers typically use your PWA. For example, if there's a set of users whouse your PWA multiple times in a week, these users might benefit from theadded convenience of launching your app from a smartphone homescreen orfrom the Start menu in a desktop operating system. Some productivity andentertainment applications also benefit from the extra screen real-estatecreated by removing the browser toolbars from the window in installed

or minimal-ui
modes.Promoting installation #
To indicate your Progressive Web App is installable, and to provide a customin-app install flow:
- Listen for the
beforeinstallprompt
event. - Save the
beforeinstallprompt
event, so it can be used to trigger theinstall flow later. - Alert the user that your PWA is installable, and provide a button or otherelement to start the in-app installation flow.
The
beforeinstallprompt
event, and the appinstalled
event have been movedfrom the Web App Manifest spec to their ownincubator. The Chrome teamremains committed to supporting them, and has no plans to remove or deprecatesupport. web.dev continues to recommend using them to provide a customizedinstall experience.Listen for the beforeinstallprompt
event #
If your Progressive Web App meets the required installation criteria, the browser fires a
beforeinstallprompt
event. Save a reference to theevent, and update your user interface to indicate that the user can installyour PWA. This is highlighted below. There are many different patterns that you can use tonotify the user your app can be installed and provide an in-app installflow, for example, a button in the header, an item in the navigation menu,or an item in your content feed.
In-app installation flow #
To provide in-app installation, provide a button or other interface elementthat a user can click to install your app. When the element isclicked, call
prompt()
on the saved beforeinstallprompt
event (storedin the deferredPrompt
variable). It shows the user a modal install dialog, asking them to confirm they want to install your PWA.The
userChoice
property is a promise that resolves with the user's choice. You can only call prompt()
on the deferred event once. If the userdismisses it, you'll need to wait until the beforeinstallprompt
eventis fired again, typically immediately after the userChoice
propertyhas resolved.Try it!Make a site installable using the beforeinstallprompt event.
Detect when the PWA was successfully installed #
You can use the
userChoice
property to determine if the user installedyour app from within your user interface. But, if the user installs yourPWA from the address bar or other browser component, userChoice
won'thelp. Instead, you should listen for the appinstalled
event. It is firedwhenever your PWA is installed, no matter what mechanism is used to installyour PWA.Detect how the PWA was launched #

The CSS
display-mode
media query indicates how the PWA was launched, either in a browser tab, or as an installed PWA. This makes it possible toapply different styles depending on how the app was launched. For example, always hide the install button and provide a back button when launched as aninstalled PWA.Track how the PWA was launched #
To track how users launch your PWA, use
matchMedia()
to test thedisplay-mode
media query. Safari on iOS doesn't supportthis yet, so you must check navigator.standalone
, it returns a booleanindicating whether the browser is running in standalone mode.Track when the display mode changes #
To track if the user changes between
standalone
, and browser tab
, listen forchanges to the display-mode
media query.Update UI based on the current display mode #
To apply a different background color for a PWA when launched as an installedPWA, use conditional CSS:

Chrome on Android #

What we all know is that Google was going all-in on the PWA (Progressive Web App) movement; but what you probably don’t know, is that Microsoft was planning on the same thing and has already made their move.
With Microsoft’s recent embrace of PWA by encouraging app makers to incorporate PWA into their UWP apps, Progressive Web Apps can now actually be available on the Windows 10 Store and are more adaptive to the user’s needs than ever.
For developers who want to tailor an existing web codebase to Windows 10, or provide a first-class cross-platform experience with native capabilities and enhancements, PWA provides an on-ramp to the Universal Windows Platform that doesn’t require demoting or forking existing web resources.
Welcoming Progressive Web Apps to Microsoft Edge and Windows 10, Windows BlogCoupled with the fact that installations of PWAs are made possible with Chrome 70 onwards, the future of all things PWA is getting more and more realistic with each passing day.
With all these things going on, it looked like Spotify was unable to resist the temptation and joined the race with their own version of Spotify PWA, despite having their own desktop app.

PWA vs Desktop App: What’s The Difference?
You might be wondering, why try PWA when Spotify already has a desktop app? That same question was asked by us and, spurred by which, we then started working on this article in order to deliver the best possible answer to music enthusiasts out there. One thing for certain, we can tell you, is that Spotify has really stepped up their game with their PWA version.
The Old Monotone UI is No More
Visually, we feel that Spotify PWA is more polished and vastly different compared to its desktop app counterpart. It is also more reactive, adaptive and more responsive; the in-app animations are improved; together these changes make for an effortless and tailored experience.
Your background colors are now adapable to your album genres and change colors accordingly, making your experience more personalized and unique—as a music player should be.
A Total Functionality Revamp
We felt as though Spotify PWA went through a revamp when it comes to its functionality!
How to resolve Spotify Premium Apk issue? The users can commonly encounter problems in the application. https://icenew.weebly.com/blog/how-cancel-spotify-on-app. Just download the free Spotify premium version and enjoy the latest songs at a single click. They might face random black screen, crashes, track degradation, and playlist no longer available. So forget about purchasing costly Cds and storing them in your home.
Menus such as Playlists, Made for you, Albums … are now relocated to the above of the main section, making the left panel less clustered and enabling more room for users. This is especially useful for music enthusiasts who have lots of playlists and in need of more space or users who are more on the orderly side and can’t stand a crowded UI.
As you browse through the Spotify PWA on the web, you’ll now have the option to choose to have links from Spotify open in a standalone Spotify PWA, which is actually pretty cool.
One Huge Drawback
The one and biggest drawback that we could find was that Spotify PWA is unavailable for offline uses. It’s not as though offline availability for Spotify PWA is impossible, it’s only a tricky process:
Spotify’s web player usesEncrypted Media Extensions (EME) which requires exchange of keys with external servers.
Hopefully, with time and dedicated work from the talented Spotify developers, offline functionalities will soon be available for Spotify.
